London Gatwick is prepared to welcome passengers this summer in what will be the busiest season since 2019.

The busiest day for passengers traveling through London Gatwick is expected to be on Sunday, 11 August. The busiest day for flights, both arrivals and departures, is expected to be on Sunday, 1 September with 905 air traffic movements.

The top three short-haul destinations this summer are Barcelona, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca; while the most popular long-haul choices are Dubai, New York and Orlando.

This summer passengers can choose from 56 airlines flying to 223 destinations, with 169 short-haul destinations across a large European network and 51 long-haul routes. New routes recently underway include short-haul flights to Gothenburg (Sweden), Vagar (Faroe Islands), and Ponta Delgada (Azores, Portugal) and Salerno (Italy) which began on 13 July.

Once at the airport, at least 95% of passengers will pass through security in five minutes or less. Once in the departure lounges, passengers can experience great retail and food and beverage offerings.

Nick Williams, Head of Passenger Operations, London Gatwick, said: “Teams here at London Gatwick are putting in extraordinary efforts to ensure passengers will have the best start to their holidays this summer. We are working closely with our airlines and other airport partners to ensure a smooth operation for all.

“The coming weeks will be busier than normal, we encourage passengers to read our top tips in advance of visiting the airport so they are prepared and know what to expect.”

Top tips for passengers travelling through London Gatwick over the summer holidays:

  • Plan your journey to the airport in advance: Check road works and rail services before you travel

  • Prepare for security as normal: Bring liquids in containers up to 100ml in 1-litre clear plastic bags and remove those plastic bags and electrical items from hand luggage

  • Book special assistance at least 48 hours in advance:  More information is available on the  London Gatwick website

  • Arrive on time: Make sure you arrive when check-in opens. Typically, this is three hours before a long-haul flight and two hours before a short-haul flight

  • Make the most of London Gatwick’s range of restaurants and bars: Pizza Express, Black Sheep Coffee and Krispy Kreme have all landed at London Gatwick in recent months

  • If shopping, enjoy 10% off when you use World Duty Free’s Reserve & Collect service: Browse products online, reserve them up to 30 days before you travel, then collect and pay in-store

London Gatwick is investing in its long-term future and its planning application to bring the airport’s existing Northern Runway into routine use, has now entered the examination phase with the Planning Inspectorate. This low-impact plan will improve resilience, reduce delays, and provide a significant boost to the national and regional economy by supporting trade, tourism, and new jobs.

With 41 million annual passengers, London Gatwick is the UK’s second largest and one of Europe’s top ten airports.  It is a vital piece of national infrastructure that drives both the national and regional economies by generating £5.5 billion GVA and supporting over 76,000 jobs (2023).  Almost 60 airlines fly from the airport to over 150 short-haul and more than 50 long-haul destinations.  With a declared capacity of 55 movements an hour, London Gatwick is the most efficient single runway airport in the world.

The airport is located 28 miles south of the UK capital and is extremely well-connected, with more than a quarter of England’s population (15 million people) – including all of London – less than one hour away by road or rail.  A six-year, £2 billion sustainable growth programme includes an ambitious plan to be a net zero airport by 2030 and to increase capacity by bringing the airport’s existing Northern Runway into routine use, alongside its Main Runway.  Vinci Airports owns a 50.01% stake in the airport, with Global Infrastructure Partners managing the remaining 49.99%.
